Open Reduction and Internal Fixation
- General information
- Open reduction of fractures requires surgery to realign bones; may include internal fixation with pins, screws, wires, plates, rods, or nails
- Indications include
- Compound fractures
- Fractures accompanied by serious neurovascular injuries
- Fractures with widely separated fragments
- Comminuted fractures
- Fractures of the femur
- Fractures of joints
- Nursing interventions: preoperative
- Provide routine pre-op care.
- Provide meticulous skin preparation to prevent infection.
- Nursing interventions: postoperative
- Provide routine post-op care.
- Maintain affected limb in proper alignment.
- Perform neurovascular checks to affected extremity.
- Observe for post-op infection.
