Brain Abscess
- General information
- Collection of free or encapsulated pus within the brain tissue
- Usually follows an infectious process elsewhere in the body (ear, sinuses, mastoid bone).
- Assessment findings
- Headache, malaise, anorexia
- Vomiting
- Signs of increased ICP
- Focal neurologic deficits (hemiparesis, seizures)
- Nursing interventions
- Administer large doses of antibiotics as ordered.
- Monitor vital signs and neuro checks.
- Provide symptomatic and supportive care.
- Prepare client for surgery if indicated (see Craniotomy).
