Encephalitis
- General information
- Inflammation of the brain caused by a virus, e.g., herpes simplex (type I) or arbovirus (transmitted by mosquito or tick)
- May occur as a sequela of other diseases such as measles, mumps, chickenpox.
- Assessment findings
- Headache
- Fever, chills, vomiting
- Signs of meningeal irritation
- Possibly seizures
- Alterations in LOC
- Nursing interventions
- Monitor vital signs and neuro checks frequently.
- Provide nursing measures for increased ICP, seizures, hyperthermia if they occur.
- Provide nursing care for confused or unconscious client as needed.
- Provide client teaching and discharge planning: same as for meningitis.
