Open Reduction and Internal Fixation

  1. General information
    1. Open reduction of fractures requires surgery to realign bones; may include internal fixation with pins, screws, wires, plates, rods, or nails
    2. Indications include
      1. Compound fractures
      2. Fractures accompanied by serious neurovascular injuries
      3. Fractures with widely separated fragments
      4. Comminuted fractures
      5. Fractures of the femur
      6. Fractures of joints
  2. Nursing interventions: preoperative
    1. Provide routine pre-op care.
    2. Provide meticulous skin preparation to prevent infection.
  3. Nursing interventions: postoperative
    1. Provide routine post-op care.
    2. Maintain affected limb in proper alignment.
    3. Perform neurovascular checks to affected extremity.
    4. Observe for post-op infection.
