1.2) BAD THINGS TO SAY

false reassurance -- Don’t worry, everything will be alright.
belittling -- Don’t be concerned, everyone feels like that.
judging -- Its your own mistake; if you had stopped smoking.
defending -- All doctors here are simply great.

Communication blocks:
Failure to listen
Stereotypes and prejudice
Cultural misunderstanding
Language inappropriate for nurse-client relationship

I ready your recent series (good things, bad things, nursing process). It made me think of the good experiences I have had with some truly outstanding professionals in your field. Over the past few years, my mother-in-law survived breast cancer, my brother-in-law broke an arm, my sone was born, and my mother had open heart surgery.

In each case, the nurses were caring, emphathetic, sensitive, and professional. Not only did they do their job with excellence, but they did it with compassion and understanding. They were a blessing to the patient and to the family.

Thank you for what you do to help good nurses be great nurses.
